WHY A PLASTIC FREE FORMULA CERTIFICATION?

For a brand to be remarkable nowadays, it must convince consumers that it cares about social and ethical criteria, animal welfare, environmental protection, and human health. One growing concern is the presence of plastic in cosmetic formulas. Taobé addresses this issue by offering a Plastic-Free certification, which confirms that a product is formulated without plastic. In addition to its cosmetic compliance services, Taobé provides a range of certifications covering these key values, each represented with a beautifully designed logo.

Formula-only plastic-free certification

Taobé created the plastic free cosmetics formula logo to support your brand’s responsible formulation and its commitment to avoiding microplastics in products. To obtain this certification, the brand must provide documentation about the ingredients and the manufacturing process.

Taobé can only certify formulas which:

  • Are not a wipe nor a single-use product
  • Exclude the use of plastic during the bulk production process and/or filling procedures
  • Do not contain any substance that is considered microplastics

Why Taobé does not certify packaging as plastic-free

The reason is simple: to avoid the risk of greenwashing. Under the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), targets have been set to reduce packaging waste and ensure that all packaging is fully recyclable by 2050, in line with a zero-waste objective. The focus is therefore on designing packaging that is optimised for recycling and reusability, rather than eliminating plastics entirely — a goal that remains highly complex.

According to the Cosmetics Packaging Claim Guidelines from L’Oréal and Quantis, plastic-free packaging as a claim can only be made:

if the former packaging for the given purpose contained plastics, if the packaging was re-designed without plastic, and if the re-design does not lead to a higher overall environmental footprint. This claim can’t be made if the packaging contains bio-based plastics – as bio-based plastics are plastics”.

Because the conditions for making a “plastic-free” packaging claim are so restrictive, Taobé excludes packaging from its plastic-free certification.

How to obtain the plastic-free formula certification

Our experts can verify that your formula is plastic-free during the Formula Check stage. Close collaboration with your suppliers is essential to ensure the documentation provided—such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Certificates of Analysis (COA), and Regulatory Data Sheets—clearly details all impurities present in the raw materials.

Comprehensive compatibility testing must also be carried out to confirm that no substances from the packaging migrate into the finished product over time.
